The budding singer and songwriter got his start in the Miracles, a group that bridged the doo-wop and early soul that was popular in the 1950s and early 1960s. But it wasn’t until their hit "Shop Around," that the group got some national play. It hit number two on the charts and helped to establish the Motown record label. The song also began to define the Motown sound, which incorporated gospel, rhythmic grooves and a blend of R&B and pop.
The Miracles went on to record some of the most well known hits of all time, including "I Second That Emotion," "The Tracks of My Tears" and "Oooo Baby Baby." Robinson became known as a romantic balladeer with soaring vocals and a beautiful high tenor. He also began working with other Motown artists as a songwriter and producer, and helped to write and produce "My Guy" for Mary Wells and "My Girl" for the Temptations.
In 1967, the name of the group changed from the Miracles to Smokey Robinson and the Miracles. In 1970, their song, "Tears of A Clown," shot to number one.
Robinson left the group to launch a solo career in 1972. He recorded frequently, with a shift toward urban contemporary music with a mellower sound. "Cruisin" and "Being With You" were his biggest solo hits.
He continues to be lauded as one of Motown’s major forces, and was dubbed by Bob Dylan as "America’s greatest living poet."
