Formed in 1991, this all-star group was comprised of keyboardist Bob James, guitarist Lee Ritenour, bassist Nathan East, and drummer Harvey Mason. They have since recorded a number of CDs for Warner Bros. that have all been big-sellers. Larry Carlton took over the guitarist's spot in the late '90s, first appearing in Fouplay on the band's successful 1998 album, 4. The group's music borders on jazz with some strong improvisations mixed in with large doses of pop and R&B.
Fourplay's debut album, Fourplay (1991), reached Number 1 on Billboard's jazz chart and stayed there for a record 34 weeks, and ultimately garnered the group a gold record. A second Fourplay project, Between The Sheets (1993), was released, followed by Elixir (1994) which was presented with the "Jazz Album Of The Year" award at the 1996 Soul Train Awards. Their fourth album, aptly titled 4 (1998), entered the jazz charts at number one. They then released Snowbound (1999), which contains their smooth sounds for the Christmas season. Yes, Please followed in 2000. Heartfelt (2002) and their latest album, Journey (2004), were both on the RCA Victor Group label.
