Collective Soul
07/15/2009 (Wednesday - 7:00 PM) at Revolution
After four years out of the public eye, Collective Soul singer Ed Roland has a message for the world. "Let the word out/I gotta get it out. Whoa, I’m feeling better now," he declares in "Better Now," the energetic rocker that launched Youth (November, 2004), the Georgia rockers’ first studio album since 2000’s Blender.
The band’s original five members from Stockbridge, GA, first met in high school. Soul founder and songwriter, Ed Roland recorded a demo in 1993 at a small independent studio. One of the songs on the demo, "Shine," began getting airplay on a university-run station in Georgia and later on a commercial station in Florida. A major label deal prompted a debut LP released in 1994, Hints, Allegations, And Things Left Unsaid (Atlantic), which featured Roland and a drum machine.
The band is now reenergized, thanks in part to co-producer Dexter Green and new guitarist Joel Kosche. Collective Soul features brothers Ed Roland (Vocals, Guitar, Keyboard), and Dean Roland (Guitars), Joel Kosche (Guitar), and Will Turpin (Bass, Percussion).
"Youth to me is a mindset, not a number," Ed says. "We’ve been doing this for ten years and we’ve never felt more youthful and more ready to be in the position that we’re in." "Even the music represents that starting over to some degree. We switched gears and went to more of our roots on the music level and production level," Dean adds.
Collective Soul seems to have recaptured the hunger and determination of a new band just starting out, rather than an act that had 19 different singles reach the Billboard charts during a seven-year span.
After a seven-year run that that was highlighted by such rock radio smashes as the catchy as hell "Gel," one of seven songs during that interval to go to #1 on the Billboard Rock Tracks charts, the omnipresent upbeat number "Shine," the soaring ballad "The World I Know," "Blame," "December," "Precious Declaration," Collective Soul has learned a few things about writing memorable hooks. All of that experience went into the striking 11 songs on Youth, an album Ed describes as "a mixture of Dosage and the first CD, really poppy tunes and fun production."
Among the standout selections is the infectious chorus of "Home," the heartfelt and hooky ballad "How Do You Love"; the atmospheric, rich mid-tempo rocker "Perfect To Stay," and the anthem-esque "Under Heaven’s Skies," which explodes from its genial verses into a ferociously raucous chorus.
"I want people to feel the good energy, the good place that we are in. I think that a lot of these songs represent that," Dean says.
The group’s first band effort was released in 1995, entitled Collective Soul (Atlantic), and produced a string of radio hits including "Untitled" and "December."
Following the success of that album came Disciplined Breakdown (Atlantic), Interview in 1996 (Baktabak import)
,Dosage (Atlantic) in 1999 and Blender (Atlantic) in 2000.
The release of the CD/DVD in 2006, Home: A Live Concert Recording with the Atlanta Symphony Youth Orchestra has proven that Collective Soul’s heavily orchestrated sound has successfully pulled off the symphonic rock experiment. Collective Soul favorites like "Listen,"
"December," "The World I Know," "Gel," and of course, their breakthrough hit "Shine," can be found on this newest release.
