Pat Benatar
in
Chicago
Pat Benatar’s career began in 1977 when she was discovered singing at New York’s Catch a Rising
Star club. Immediately signed to Chrysalis Records, she recruited Neil Giraldo and a backup band for her
debut album, In the Heat of the Night. Released in 1979, the album reached #12 on the U.S. charts and
eventually went multi-platinum. Her first single, Heartbreaker, hit #23 and two subsequent singles, We
Live for Love and You Better Run, also became great successes.
By the time Benatar released her second album, Crimes of Passion, she was a household name. Her hit single,
Hit Me with Your Best Shot, reached #9 on the charts and sold millions. Another song, Treat Me
Right, got considerable airplay as well. The album eventually went multi-platinum.
From 1980 to 1983, Benatar earned an unprecedented four straight Grammy awards in a row for
"Best Rock Vocal Performance Female." With the hit singles, Fire and Ice and Love Is a Battlefield, she
emerged as a rock and roll superstar, and one of the leading stars of the emerging music video scene.
The most successful album of her career, Precious Time, was released in 1981 and topped the U.S.
charts. Then followed her marriage to Neil Giraldo and a series of platinum records--Get Nervous, Live
From Earth and Tropico--and gold records--Seven the Hard Way, Wide Awake in Dreamland, Best Shots
and True Love. The latter was a critically acclaimed blues album which included the cover of B.B. King’s
Payin’ The Cost to Be The Boss.
In 1985, Benatar and Giraldo became parents to a baby girl, Haley, but continued to record and tour.
In 1993, she left the performance circuit after the release of Gravity’s Rainbow, for a second daughter,
Hana. She concentrated instead on her writing which led to more than two dozen new songs.
Two recent concert tours gave a new generation of fans an opportunity to see one of the "great rock
belters of all time." With a career spanning more than 20 years, Benatar continues to deliver her classic
sound and a boundless energy that transcends time.
