From a career spanning more than 25 years McDonald has produced a surplus of hits both from his days as a Doobie Brother and in his solo career. In 1979 alone, McDonald won four Grammies: Song of the Year for "What a Fool Believes," Best Arrangement, Accompanying Vocals for "What a Fool Believes," Best Pop Vocal Performance By a Duo, Group of Chorus for "Minute by Minute," and Record of the Year for "What a Fool Believes." In 2003, his Motown record went platinum and received two Grammy nominations. Songs like "On My Own" and "I Keep Forgettin’ (Every Time You’re Near)" were Top 10 hits on both the Pop and R&B charts. He then released Motown 2 in 2004, which debuted at #9 on the Billboard Top Ten and #8 on Billboard’s Hip-hop and R&B chart.
In August 2005, Warner Brothers celebrated McDonald’s successful career with the release of Michael McDonald: The Ultimate Collection which includes hits from his days with the Doobie Brothers and his solo career, in addition to his rendition of "Ain’t No Mountain High Enough." McDonald released a Christmas Album in November 2005 exclusively through Hallmark Gold Crown which features traditional holiday classics and new songs written by McDonald.
