Lynyrd Skynyrd is the quintessential American rock and roll band. Anthems like "Sweet Home Alabama," "Free Bird," and "Gimme Three Steps" all tell stories like American folklore. They are OURS whether you live in the north or the south, in a small town or big city.
Lynyrd Skynyrd is legendary to say the least. They’ve managed to overcome extreme personal strife and loss to sell over 35 million albums. Lanyard Skynyrd’s overdriven power-blues rock and Southern hard-rock image pushed them to the top and made them the definitive Southern Rock Band. But now it is the down to earth, blue collar honesty in original leader Ronnie Van Zant’s lyrics that are most remembered. The band made an album each year between 1973 and 1977, but their recording, and their band, ended abruptly after a plane crash killed Van Zant and two other band members.
Ten years later Lynyrd Skynyrd reunited with new members, including Van Zant’s brother Johnny Van Zant, and picked up where they left off. Their Southern by the Grace of God Lynyrd Skynyrd Tribute Tour in 1987 was a success, and they began recording once again in 1991. Lynyrd Skynyrd still releases new albums into 2003, and it isn’t uncommon to see several generations of music-lovers at the band’s concerts. Their classic hits, along with newer songs geared towards younger audiences, have made their tours some of the highest grossing in the country.
