Les Miserables

Les Miserables, a legendary Broadway musical theater production in its own right (which ran originally from 1987 - 2003 in the Broadway Theatre and Imperial Theatre; and won many awards including a 1987 Tony Award for Best Musical, and Best Book of a Musical for Les Miserables on Broadway), with a long and successful history on Broadway and as a traveling theater show. The story is based on Victor Hugo's novel of France during the revolution. The plot line follows Jean Valjean as a prisoner who escapes and changes his life for the better, and takes care of his adopted daughter, Cosette, while he is perpetually pursued by chief inspector Javert; all of this taking place during the background of the French Revolution. Many movie adaptations have been made throughout the years, including the 1998 Les Miserables directed by Billle August, staring Liam Neeson as Jean Valjean, Geoffrey Rush as Inspector Javert, Uma Thurman as Fantine, Claire Danes as Cosette.
The song book for Les Miserables on Broadway (with music by Claude-Michel Schönberg, and English lyrics by Herbert Kretzmer) has sold tons of copies and includes staples like: Castle on a Cloud, Do You Hear the People Sing.
Les Miserables returns to Broadway as a musical revival for a limited engagement in Fall 2006, at the Broadhurst Theatre on Broadway, New York City. Open cast for this revival includes Gary Beach (2001 Tony Award winner for Best Featured Actor in a Musical for The Producers) as Thénardier, Alexander Gemignani as Jean Valjean, Norm Lewis as Chief Inspector Javert.
