The acidic BMG music executive got the idea to form the group, which means "divine male performer" in Italian, after watching an Andrea Bocelli-Sarah Brightman duet. Cowell sought to fuse a pop music background with operatic voices and an Armani-model look, and Il Divo was formed in December 2003. They have cracked the top 5 in 25 countries and have been #1 in 13 of those. Their self-titled debut went to #1 without a released single. The last band to do that was Led Zeppelin.
