Engelbert Humperdinck

Humperdinck was born Arnold George Dorsey on May 3, 1936 in Madras, India. Growing up in England, he learned saxophone at age 11 and tried his hand at singing at 17. He put singing on hold to join the military but returned in 1958 to record a single for Decca Records.
His early career was a struggle until he met up with former roommate Gordon Mills in 1965. Mills suggested Dorsey change his name to Engelbert Humperdinck after the 19th century Austrian composer. To help create an air of mystery, Humperdinck was advised to refrain from fan contact, even if it meant escaping out of dressing room windows after a concert.
The gimmicks worked. In 1967, Humperdinck released the pop ballad version of "Release Me" which rocketed to the top of the British charts. It ultimately reached number one in 11 countries, selling $15 million worldwide and achieving 56 consecutive weeks on the charts and earning Humperdinck a place in the Guiness Book of World Records.
The song kicked off a streak of seven straight Top Five songs. Humperdinck became known for his easy listening hits throughout the 1970s in both the U.K. and the U.S. and internationally.
Throughout his 35 year career, Humperdinck has generated sales in excess of 130 million records, including 64 Gold albums, 24 platinum albums, four Grammy nominations, a Golden Globe award and a star on the Hollywood Walk of Fame. He has performed for the Queen of England, several Presidents of the U.S. and many heads of state. He has also performed with some of the greatest entertainers, including another musical legend -Elvis Presley.
With recent international acclaim and a new platinum hit, Humperdinck is enjoying a career resurgence. His newest U.S. release, "Engelbert Humperdinck’s -- Greatest Love Songs," has reached number four on the UK charts and become a platinum hit. Coupled with his national television commercial for John Smith’s beer, and the re-release of "Release Me," Humperdinck is enjoying increased popularity in his home country. He continues to tour worldwide and remains a box office draw due to his legendary career.
