With a new $39 million salary cap, GM Ken Holland dropped a lot of big contracts in defenceman Derian Hatcher, fan-favourite Darren McCarty, forward Ray Whitney and goaltender Curtis Joseph. Detroit did sure up the defence with Andreas Lilja and Andy Delmore and returning netminder Chris Osgood. Yzerman, Shanahan and Chelios are still on board (even if they're in the twilight of their careers), along with defensive specialists Kirk Maltby and Kris Draper.
