The New York Jets of the AFC's Eastern Division seem to be a kick, catch, pass or run of catching up to their AFC rival the New England Patriot's. Last season, the Jets would have made it to the AFC Championship game, but came up short. A field goal short that is, as New York Jets kicker Doug Brien missed a critical field goal at the end of their divisional playoff game against
the Pittsburgh Steelers.
In the off season the Jets have made some moves that they hope will
increase that possibility of finally making a run in the playoffs. The first move they made was to draft new kicker Mike Nugent. However, the off season for the Jets has also set them back a little with free agency. The Jets lost defensive tackle Jason Ferguson, tackle Kareem McKenzie and running back LaMont Jordan. However, the Jets faithful have a lot to be optimistic about for the coming 2005 NFL Season. The Jets have reached the playoffs in three of the last four seasons behind head coach Herman Edwards. Chad Pennington is progressing
every season, and is expected to make big strides this season, although Pennington is coming off shoulder surgery that happened during the off season. Pennington lead the entire NFL in passing efficiency and has been noted as an great reader of defensive schemes and blitzes. Running back Curtis Martin has rushed over 1,000 yards every season, and lead the league last season with 1,697 yards in rushing with 14 touchdowns. Wide out Laveranues Coles has made his way back to the Jets organization, since he was traded to the Patriots back in 2003.
The Jets have to overcome a lot of hurdles it seems as the 2005 season begins, and the arm of Pennington is still suspect following the past off season
surgery to his shoulder. A prime time game that many New York Jets fans have circles is on December 4th, 2005, as the Jets and Patriots play in Foxboro
Stadium.
