With a new $39 million salary cap, GM Ken Holland dropped a lot of big contracts in defenceman Derian Hatcher, fan-favourite Darren McCarty, forward Ray Whitney and goaltender Curtis Joseph. Detroit did sure up the defence with Andreas Lilja and Andy Delmore and returning netminder Chris Osgood. Yzerman, Shanahan and Chelios are still on board (even if they're in the twilight of their careers), along with defensive specialists Kirk Maltby and Kris Draper. The Red Wings may still be an aging team in some aspects but they are still well respected in the league. Look for them to be in it till the end.
